As all modern women know, a woman’s role in society is one of submission. Submission to men, submission to their position in life, and submission to society in general. However, the Wife of Bath provides a much different approach to a woman’s role in life. She says that women deserve to dominate in a marriage, and she practices this herself. This differs severely from the point of views of the Franklin and the Nun’s Priest, both who think that women are not meant to dominate men. It is evident that the Franklin and the Nun’s Priest both believe that women should not dominate a marriage. The Nun’s Priest obviously believes that a woman is unable to be trusted with much, since the Bible paints a picture of this. As he says, “women’s counsel is often baneful; women’s counsel brought us first to woe, and caused Adam to leave Paradise, where he had been merry and well at ease” (Chaucer 405).
