Recently Jack Maconnell introduced a bill outlawing bigotry and sectarianism in Scotland. He has done this in a response to a huge public out cry against sectarianism. Sectarianism, though, plays a huge part in Scottish life and for Mr Maconells bill to work it would be better understanding of sectarianism in the West of Scotland
Sectarianism can be rooted back in history to the year of 1155, when the king of England was given the throne of Ireland by the pope. ... The catholic Irish felt that he was a traitor to the Pope and so he lost his power over Ireland. ... In the 16th century, 1609 James I of Britain established a colony of Scots and Northern English in Ulster in an attempt to create a power base for English rule. The Irish Protestants who now dominate Northern Ireland are descendants of those passionately British settlers. Protestant domination and the introduction of English laws in Ireland drove the Irish to revolt in 1641. When Oliver Cromwell took over control of England, after the Puritan revolution he came to Ireland to colonise it and destroy the hold of Catholicism.
