Ever since the infusion of external media sources such as television, video games, hip-hop and heavy metal music into the home and into adolescent life, there was been controversy over whether these sources have a negative impact on adolescence. Critics of hip-hop and heavy metal music may believe that the music causes adolescents to act out violently. There are many reasons why music with violent lyrics does not cause normal teenagers to act out violently. No study on the relationship between violent music and violent behavior has been done, nor can it hold any bearing in science or otherwise. Parents need to be more involved and more aware of what their kids are listening to, but also more importantly, of what their kids are taking from this music. Music plays an important role in adolescents’ lives, but that does not mean that all adolescents are impressionable when it comes to the lyrics in the songs. Most adolescents listen to “violent” music not because it is violent, but because it is about rebellion. ...
Music with violent lyrics is not a direct cause of violence occurring in normal teenagers. The normal teenage mind would not listen to violent music and then decide to commit a violent act. Only psychologically troubled youths would commit violent acts after listening to violent music lyrics.
