“A Modest Counterproposal”
Eating the children is barbaric and inhumane. It is unthinkable by any civilized or educated individual except for perhaps an Irishman. At any rate the Irish are neither civilized nor educated. I propose an easier fix because we, the English people, must be responsible for the welfare of Ireland. To be logical when going about this matter, we must travel to the root of the cause. I say we sterilize the women; of course, an adequate amount of fertile women should be kept for purposes of procreation. Twenty percent of women able to bear children may be reserved for producing workers for our farms and another ten percent would provide cheap labor to be sent as domestic servants for England.
