However, environmental concerns within the NAFTA countries, specifically in Mexico, has stirred up much debate and continues to be a highly controversial topic. ... Many of the technologies and infrastructure available in Mexico are not as developed and updated as those used in the United States and the overall lack of strong environmental standards along this border and throughout Mexico has caused many groups to seek legal redress against NAFTA. ... Carlsen raise other issues concerning the effects of NAFTA on many Mexicans. For the farmers and the overall agricultural sector of Mexico, many aspects of free trade which NAFTA supports and represents are being questioned. ... This cost dumping is supposed to be prohibited under NAFTA, as well as the World Trade Organization, but it continues to occur. ... One must consider the fact that Mexican poverty in rural populations has increased significantly since before NAFTA, while United States agricultural business have grown and developed tremendously under the model of free trade. ... Although many sectors have benefited from the natural resources, capital, location near the United States market, and increase of infrastructure since the establishment of NAFTA, many rural farmers have not had the option to reap the benefits. ... The trade of agriculture, after the establishment of NAFTA, has faced trade barriers in the United States and has even dealt with the closing borders in Florida to protect United States growers.
There have also have been many varying impacts on wages and incomes in Mexico since the implementation of NAFTA. Since the implementation of NAFTA, Mexico has developed a large and increasing trade deficit with the rest of the world as it’s net exports from the rest of the world now exceed its new exports to the United States. Many use the official unemployment levels in Mexico to say that the levels are lower now than before NAFTA. ... After seven years of NAFTA being implemented, it has not delivered the benefits that it promised in terms of what workers in Mexico would gain out of the agreement. ...
A more positive view of the effect NAFTA has had on Mexico is expressed by R. ... For investors and those heavily involved with the financial industry, NAFTA has been a huge success as it has increased volumes of trade and the flow of financials between the three nations. ... On the other hand, for many seeing NAFTA from a labor perspective see this alliance as a failure as a large majority of the people in North America support themselves through working and not investments and are therefore not reaping the same benefits. ... The article, “How Mexico Has Fared: The Lessons of NAFTA” by M. Valente discusses that the model on which NAFTA was created was not one which favored free movement of workers and transferred funds form the wealthier counties to the less advanced nations to reduced disparities among members, as it is in the European Union. What NAFTA actually has is an incredible gap in development between Mexico and the United States and Canada. Overall, the economic activity, exports, foreign investment, and employment have grown since NAFTA went into effect in 1994. ... Although there has been an increase in jobs in Mexico since NAFTA, 29 percent of those who are employed are in the informal economy which has no health or pension benefits and 30 percent of jobs are in the maquiladoras or export assembly sector which is controversial in itself.
