The Challenge of Cultural Relativism Critical Summary The theory of cultural relativism is that different cultures have different beliefs; it is impossible for one to judge accurately the beliefs and or value systems of other cultures and each culture’s beliefs are considered “right” within that culture. The author’s intent in this passage was to clearly portray the theory of cultural relativism; illustrating not only the benefits of learning about cultural relativism, but also showing the opposing arguments and consequences of taking it seriously. ... Cultural relativists believe that universal truth is just a myth; that it cannot exist in a world of so many different cultures and therefore different moral codes. ... After much traveling, he encountered many new cultures and he decided to conduct an ethical experiment to prove the point of cultural relativism. ... This simply shows the fundamental purpose of cultural relativism, without this important concept there is only arrogance, absolutism and ethical egoism. ...
