Tailgate party: We start off in Gatorville (Bru’s Room Fort Lauderdale). In 1853 the Florida Gators arose, as did the ‘swamp’ of fans. Now in 2003 being a Gator fan becomes not a sport, yet a religion. Each obsessive and crazed fan in the city emerges to drink, eat, and watch Americas favorite past time; football, better yet COLLEGE football. The bets, jerseys, face paint, and team colors are on. As is the endless preparation before a game, it may as well take longer than the game itself. You must have your check list handy; as I over hear my boyfriend and his roommate say and I quote “Gator jersey(check), gator hats(check), gator chairs(check), a gator drink sleeve(check), face paint on(check), and shoes’ men don’t forget the shoes(check!). Now with that done (whew) we head out THREE hours before the game to tailgate (even at a bar!)! This is some sort of male sometimes female bonding ritual. I think it is a poor excuse to just drink longer. But bonding it is. I was welcome to this ritual with open arms from everyone; which was a surprise for Florida. But the anticipation ends with the beginning of the good, bad, and worse aspects of the real game! The first quarter: Where else could you possibly see the range in emotions when a rivalry scores, than in football. The horrendous language and outlandish behavior start even before the game begins.
