How to draft a policy value and fact resolution

... Determine the nature of the underlying question: The statement “human consumption of animals is immoral” represents an attitude towards something, therefore it is considered a value resolution. If the statement would have been “human consumption of animals should be banned” then it would have been a resolution of policy, meaning that action must be taken place to solve the problem. ... Keep the resolution as simple as possible: The statement “human consumption of animals is immoral” is kept simple, it is clear that the attitude of the resolution is that consuming animals is wrong. The resolution does not contain confusing vocabulary or unclear concepts which is important because a resolution in a debate round should be kept simple. ... The resolution is a simple value resolution, if I would have combined separate ideas my resolution would have sounded like I was trying to convey too many thoughts at once for example; “human consumption of animals is an immoral practice and everyone should be vegetarians. This makes the statement complicated and turns it into a whole separate resolution. If I had included both arguments in my resolution then I would have to prove two burdens of proof which complicates the resolution and makes it harder to win the argument. ... The resolution “ The murderous destruction of animals for the purpose of human devourment is immoral” would deflect their thoughts from the idea that consumption is immoral to the process of how the animals are prepared. ... I would rather word it more safely, and prove my thoughts through argument rather than shock value. ... Correctly place the burden of proof and presumption: The resolution must propose a change in the status quo, had I said “Human consumption of animals is moral” this would be worded incorrectly. ...

Resolution: Same sex marriages should be legalized. ... Determine the nature of the underlying question: The resolution “same sex marriages should be legalized” represents the need for change in society today, therefore it is a policy resolution. If I had said “Same sex marriages are moral”, then this would have been a value resolution because it represents an attitude towards something. ... Keep the resolution as simple as possible: It is important to keep the terms in the resolution simple so the audience and judge are not confused. ... The resolution would have been very complicated if I would have said “ The union of couples who are the same gender should be a practice that is legalized throughout the world”.
