Gilgamesh is a powerful figure of a man but a poor king: he tyrannizes his people, exhausting men in combat and claiming the right to sleep with any woman before her marriage. To keep him busy, the gods Anu and Aruru create a rival for Gilgamesh, Enkidu. ... With Shamhat, Enkidu travels to Uruk to meet the lonely Gilgamesh, who has been dreaming of the coming of a companion. Enkidu and Gilgamesh meet and match each others strength in combat: quickly, though, they cease fighting and, with a kiss, seal their friendship.
Gilgamesh resolves to travel to the Forest of Cedar, where he will try to kill Humbaba, the forests superhuman guardian. Enkidu expresses fear and reluctance, but in the end his attempts to dissuade Gilgamesh are to no avail.
