The Crucible Character Analasys
Rev. Hale, a main character in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible goes through radical changes. Arriving at the setting of Salem Ma. he presents himself as a confident young man, proclaiming the eradication of all unholy beings. As the play progresses he sees flaws in his own beliefs and starts questioning even himself. Later on, he is pushed to the boiling point and denounces the church and all that his life is. Finally, he comes to realize that the church is completely wrong in this situation and opposes all of his own beliefs. Hale, a man with strong beliefs in church and state is left with a bitter resentment towards the extreme relation. Hale is an expert on expelling the Devil’s agents. Upon entering Salem, he reassures the town with foreboding confidence. He promises the eradication of the all witch is unholy being as bold to say, “…We shall find him out if he has shown his face!“ referring to the Devil. Witch alone is enough to secure the village’s faith in him.
