Most people are unaware that they use personal survival techniques on a daily basis. People have to use personal survival techniques to commute between their homes and workplaces, and to pay all of their debts. In Ambrose Bierce’s short story “An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge,” Farquhar is faced with a more complex type of personal survival. Farquhar is involved in an imminent life or death situation rather than a long-term survival situation. When faced with a personal survival situation, Farquhar experiences a mental and physical state of being that is uncharacteristic of a normal personal survival situation. ... He is thinking the sound of his watch is that of the Confederate troops that are coming to rescue him from the bridge. ... In a normal personal survival situation, people would not mistake a tick of a watch as being someone arriving to provide protection and safety.
