In today’s society people are too obsessed with the way they look on the outside. ... The story, “Beauty When The Other Dancer Is The Self,” tells about a young black girl, Alice Walker, who was brought up to think beauty on the outside was her most important quality. Walker went through many steps during her childhood and her adult life trying to find her self identity and these steps helped her to realize true beauty is on the inside.
Walker’s first step to find herself was present when she tried to be the cutest little girl. ... Walker had her mother make her up so that she looked pretty, thinking that would make him choose her. “Take me daddy, I am the prettiest”, she said to her father and indeed he did choose her (Walker 1). When she was six, Walker was giving an Easter speech and everyone around told her how cute she was. ... These are just two of the many times in Walker’s younger life that helped to reinforce in her head the idea that her outward appearance was more important to other people than her thoughts and feelings.
