10/29/02 American Lit. 4 Roessler As I Lay Dying: Looking at Addie 1. In Literature, or other works, we often see characters allude to others, whom may Addie most closely related to? - I believe that Addie very closely resembles the mother character in Ordinary People, Beth. Both Beth and Addie have apparent issues with their husband, and are not afraid to express them. It just so happens that the books are even formatted similarly, different characters taking turns narrating. Addie and Beth seem unhappy in their situations, and as a result disconnected from the other characters. Just as Beth so dearly loved her eldest son, Addie shows a special love for Jewel. Jewel was not born to Anse, but to Whitfield, thus the special appreciation. 2. Addie only narrates once in the novel, what purpose does it serve to hear from her in the middle of the story, rather than the beginning or end?
