According to information provided by the Chicago Coalition for Homeless (CCH) (2002), one of the most rapid growing segments of the homeless population is families with children. ... In a 1998 article by Homes for the Homeless (HFH), during the 1970s the number of homeless families in New York City remained relatively constant, with an average of 940 families living in shelters. In the 1980s New York City experienced a growth of homeless families from roughly 940 families in 1981 to more than 2,400 families by the end of 1983. ... In 10 years, New York City witnessed a remarkable 500% increase in the number of homeless families. HFH, which is New York City’s largest provider of transitional housing and social services (serving approximately 12% of New York City’s homeless families), has documented shifts in size, composition and characteristics of the families. HFH reports that in 1987 head of homeless households in 92% of cases where single women; in 1992 that number rose to 97%. In 1987, the average age of these mothers was 35. ... According to Daley (1996), most homeless people in rural areas are white; in large cities the majorities are minorities (African Americans and Latinos). ... Gorder (1998) also goes on to say that in Cincinnati, Ohio of 1,806 homeless persons surveyed, 320 were children and 358 were women (I’m really curious as to how many child protection cases involve homelessness). In Louisville, Kentucky the fastest growing poverty group is female-headed households and 75% of the calls to the emergency shelter system are from single mothers, most of them in their mid-20s.
