The Nations Number One Crime Many violent crimes occur across the country on a daily basis, but no crime is more common or more dangerous than when drunk drivers kill innocent people. Throughout the past decade, drinking and driving, or D.W.I., has escalated to become the crime that is most likely to affect the average citizen, and at the rate that it is going, there is no end in sight. People and lawmakers are beginning to notice the overwhelming number of deaths occurring, and are finally starting to take action. Drinking and driving is a very serious crime, that will affect many people throughout their lives. In America, someone is killed by a drunk driver every thirty-two seconds. Laws are now being passed to try to prevent accidents like these from happening. In recent years, new laws have gone into effect to try to eliminate drinking and driving. Most states have lowered their legal BAC, or blood alcohol content, in order to try to prevent people from driving drunk. Before 1998, all states had their legal BAC set at .010%, but with an increase in motor vehicle accidents and drinking and driving related deaths, the government has now started to reward those states that have lowered their legal BAC.
