Itroduction:
To begin, how many of you before you drink a glass of water think to yourself, “I wonder what the level of atrazine or dicloromethane is in this water that I am about to consume. ... (pause) I know, for me anyways, my only concern before a pouring myself a glass of water is “how well will it quench my thirst?” A couple of weeks ago, as I am sure you are all aware, there was a boil order in effect here in Athens and for the first time I actually wondered “what is the quality of the water that I have been consuming for the past three years.” This new found curiosity, along with the need for an informative speech topic presented me with a unique opportunity to not only educate myself with extensive research, but also to employ this knowledge in informing you of the quality of our drinking water in Athens and what the Water Department is doing to ensure our safety. Everyone in this room is either currently living in Athens or commuting here; thus, the issue of Athens’ drinking water quality affects us all. So, today I am going to provide you with, first, a brief introduction to the source water in our area, as well as the various laws and agencies that enforce them.
