The story of Savriti, as taken from the holy Mahabharata scripture, offers a profound and intricate insight into the culture of India and the beliefs of Hinduism. It effectively communicates the central teachings of the religion through a tale that evokes universal emotions and feelings. A strong ethical code is clearly evident in the text and well conveyed, as well. One Hindu teaching that was expressed especially well in the story was the belief that a woman should marry a good, decent husband and be dutiful to him for the rest of her life. In Western culture, the conception of an ideal marriage is greatly differed. Usually, the belief is that everything should be divided fifty-fifty, including responsibility, respect, role in family, etc. Therefore, many are mislead into thinking that Hinduism teaches a life of misery and slavery for women who must endure their husbands for a lifetime. In reality, it is quite the contrary, as Savriti exemplifies. Her relationship with her husband is one of utmost respect and honor. She showed attentiveness, courtesy, cheerfulness, and helpfulness because doing so brought her supreme joy as both a wife and a daughter-and-law.
