It cannot be certain what the newspaper was referring to when it said Bismarck had a ‘coalition nightmare’ but in relation to foreign affair it is most likely to be talking about the foreign policy, which for many reasons turned into a ‘coalition nightmare’ for Bismarck.
Firstly Bismarck was also striving to make Germany one of the most important and powerful nations of that time. One of the biggest fears Bismarck had was other nations forming coalitions which worked against him. The newspaper could have meant Bismarck had a ‘coalition nightmare’ in the sense that there was so much competition for power back then that he struggled to keep Germany at the top and was always frightened at the prospect of war against Germany. Bismarck never feared France on her own but when he thought there could be a possible alliance between France and another nation he suddenly panicked and took action by entering the league of the three emperors (Dreikaiserbund). There were bad relations between Austria Hungary and Russia, which Bismarck was aware of, if war were to occur between these two nations this could give France the opportunity to gain an ally. Bismarck therefore had meetings with Austria Hungary in an attempt to form an alliance with them. ... This example shows clearly that Bismarck had a ‘coalition nightmare’ in the sense that he feared other nations were forming coalitions against him. However the newspaper could be suggesting that the nightmare for Bismarck was trying to cause tensions between other nations so he could make deals which would benefit Germany. Bismarck was always trying to think up new tactics so he could use different countries in order to benefit Germany.
