George Orwell, or Eric Arthur Blair considering he never legally changed his name, was born to Richard Walmsey and Ida Limouzin Bair in Matihari, India, on June 25, 1903. Orwell’s father was an administrator in the department of the Indian Government. His mother returned to England with George and his siblings by 1905, while her husband didn’t return permanently until he retired, in 1911. George and his family then lived at Henley on Thanes, a very Edwardian town. This period of time in George’s life will come to represent a time of happiness and security that affects his thought process for the rest of his life.
Years later though George came to realize many conflicts he had with his family’s social rank, whether it is low, middle, or high class. ... These books shaped and changed George’s attitude greatly. George knew his family wasn’t impoverished because there was more knowledge of poverty than any working class family above the level of the low class.
George’s knowledge of his social standing and the importance of money to his family was where his motives originated. In September 1911 George was sent to Saint Cyprians, a snobby and very expensive private school. At school George felt like an alien because the wealthy students were accepted so obviously over him. ...
After school George was married to Eileen O’Shaughnessy on June 9, 1936. Together George and Eileen had a child, a boy, named Richard Horatio.
