The movie Wuthering Heights is not completely faithful to the original novel not only in that in only goes half way through the book, cutting off the second generation¡¯s story, but also in some other aspects concerning both the plot and the theme. The following are my observations on the difference between the movie and the novel.
First, on Cathy¡¯s part:
I was surprised to see in the movie the sudden change of Cathy¡¯s attitude when she promised to be Edgar¡¯s wife. ... Yet the critical period of struggling of Cathy¡¯s were all skipped in the movie, thus making the audience feel as if Cathy has forget all about Heathcliff and has been such an inconstant and unfeeling figure. While in fact in the novel, Cathy had been extremely low in spirit and didn¡¯t give her consent to Edgar until three years later.
And when Heathcliff returned, civilized and rich, I find in the movie that Cathy has behaved rather coldly and indifferently, addressing to him in an apathetic and distant air. In their few times of meeting, Cathy again and again treated Heathcliff like a hardened and resolute queen, far from what is told in the novel as Cathy is overjoyed and even doesn¡¯t understand why Edgar didn¡¯t share her happiness.
