Black men had to act real happy to “play the stereotyped role of the ‘good Negro’, if he did not do his yessing and grinning and act out the stereotyped image, then he was immediately considered a ‘bad Negro’, called ‘uppity, smart-alecky, arrogant’, and he could lose his job, be attacked, driven away. ... White men thought that all blacks “live like dogs. ... Griffin witnessed a black vendor selling turkeys to a white man. ... ” As Griffin made his way through the segregated South as a black, his way of thinking was changed. He was stereotyped against by people of his own race, and therefore Black Like Me is one of the “most penetrating documents yet set down on the racial question.
