My childcare center is founded on the basis of Eric Erikson’s theories of Social development. In my childcare center we know how crucial it is for children’s Social growth. Erikson has many stages in which we base our childcare beliefs on. In the first stage he states the trust vs. mistrust stage, which deals with newborn age to one and a half years old. The second stage talks about the autonomy vs. self-doubt, which deals with children one and a half to three years old. The third stage he talks about is initiative vs. guilt, which deals with children from three to six years of age. In the first stage Erikson focuses on trust vs. mistrust. He emphasizes on how infants must be able to trust the caregivers for food, nurturance and security. He shows how these things are important to a child for a feeling of being loved. When children feel they have someone that is caring about them, they feel better about themselves and they trust adults a lot more. The child blindly trusts the parent at this stage of life because they have no knowledge of life experiences such as hearing sounds, touching things and tasting familiar foods. In my childcare center we focus on how the teachers need to be trust worthy. They need to be able to handle all types of children and make them feel like they can trust them.
