Moll Flanders and Marriage in the 17th Century
Back in the 17th Century, the concept of love and marriage was very different from what it is presently. ... The novel Moll Flanders is a good example of how marriage was from that time period. ... They are when Moll marries Robin, when Moll marries the draper, when Moll marries the plantation owner, and when Moll marries Jemmy. Robin is Moll’s first marriage, and it is easy to tell that she does not love him. ... She states, “I confess I was not suitably affected with the loss of my husband; nor can I say that I ever loved him as I ought to have done or was suitable to the good usage I had from him…” After his death, however, Moll was left with about ₤1200, which she is very pleased about, and she uses that to find her next man to marry.
