In the early 1800’s the Indians of the Nebraska territory were as much as they had been. Even though life was never really stable for them, change in the Indians life was slow enough for them to adjust. The Nebraska Indians remained true to their heritage and culture and tried to sustain their way of life even as the encroachment of the American settlers incrementally took it away. The people and the government of American felt that the Indians should be Americanized, even though by doing so, it would change practically every aspect of the Indians life. The Nebraska Indians would now need to adjust to changes that would occur on them virtually over night.
The Americanization would involve the introduction of trade, religion, farming, and many other intricacies new to the Nebraska Indians. Just like all the treaties the American Government has made with the Indians, the attempts to Americanize the Indians ended in failure and lackluster efforts, mostly on the end of the U. ... This was due mainly in part to the ignorance of the American settlers and their government’s arrogance in believing that the efforts to Americanize were in the Indians best interests.
Trade was one of the first things introduced to the Nebraskan Indians by the Americans moving west. ... These pioneers were often the first whites Indians encountered. Goods never before seen by the Indians and pioneers were introduced to each other, these unique items would be traded and depended on. American traders would have to learn the habits of the Indians in order to trade effectively, however.
