Cells are the fundamental units of life, revealing all of the basic properties of life. Despite the immense importance of the cell, nearly all cells are microscopically small. But why is this? How can something this important to the ability to sustain life be so small? There are a number of reasons for the small size of cells. For a cell to function, materials have to be transported throughout the cell and among the organelles. Therefore, the correlation between the amount of cytoplasm and the amount of cellular organelles is important in limiting the size of the cell.
