I. Winning the War A. Effects of the Stalemate- total war- the channeling of a nation’s entire resources into a war effort. 1. Economic Impact a. All of the warring nations except Britain imposed universal military conscription, or “the draft,” which required all young men to be ready for military or other service. b. Governments raised taxes and borrowed huge amounts of money to pay the costs of war. c. They introduced other economic controls, such as setting prices and forbidding strikes. d. They rationed food and other products, from boots to gasoline. 2. Propaganda a. Aim of counties was to keep complete casualty figures and other discouraging news from reaching the people. b. Government censors also restricted popular literature, historical writings, motion pictures, and the arts. c. Both sides in Propaganda war- propaganda- the spreading of ideas to promote a cause or damage an opposing cause. d. Allied propaganda often played up Germany’s invasion of Belgium as a barbarous act. e. The British and French press circulated tales of atrocities, horrible acts against innocent people. Stories were greatly exaggerated, or made up. B. Women at War 1. At the front a. Military nurses shared dancers of men, at aid stations close to the front lines, they worked around the clock, especially after a big “push” brought a flood of casualties. b. In her diary, Vera Brittain describes sweating through 90-degree days in France, “stopping hemorrhages, replacing intestines, and draining and reinserting innumerable rubber tubes” with “gruesome human remains heaped on the floor” around her feet.
