“Oprah Will Curtail ‘Book Club’ Picks, and Authors Weep”
By David K. Kirkpatrick
The New York Times- April 26, 2002
This article is basically about how talk show host Oprah Winfrey is planning to shut down Oprah’s Book Club. Though the club is very popular, and has sent all of her forty-six choices to the bestseller list, Winfrey says that it is getting “harder and harder to find books on a monthly basis that I feel absolutely compelled to share.” Most authors and publishers are disappointed with her decision, as having her book club sticker on their books helped them all to sell over a million copies.
Personally, I think it is too bad that Oprah is shutting her book club down. The sales of the chosen books prove that the club does help authors and their works to become recognized. It is hard enough to write a book, and to have no one notice or respect his or her work is a lot worse.
