Sips of jasmine tea This short story centres about the couple Louise and Hal. Louise is having dreams that are of white birds made of china clay, locked inside a glass room. These birds symbolise Louise and her suppression by Hal. She is locked inside a clinical white house, with no real place of escaping, Hal doesn’t want her to even converse with the neighbours. The white colour is the colour of innocence, and purity. She wants to break the glass and fly away, that is what her dream symbolises. But the strings on the china clay birds keep her/them from escaping. In her real life Hal is the string. The house is the glass that must be broken in order to escape. Also in the start Louise see the light outside the window in a small crack. Louise wants to open up for the window, but Hal just want an electric fan.
