RADICAL VISION THE WORLD IS OUR CONSCIOUSNESS AND IT SURROUNDS US. IBID. Gary Snyder is considered one of the greatest poets alive today. He has been called the modern-day Henry David Thoreau and is described as an eco-poet and an eco-warrior. Snyder has published 16 books of poetry and prose. Turtle Island received a Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1975. He was not only a part of the growing circle of the beat generation but is also associated with Black Mountain Poetry. Snyder's interest in culture, Zen Buddhism, and the environment drove him to become a great poet of the 20th century. The Asian culture is one of Snyder’s most important influences. In 1956, Snyder traveled to Kyoto, Japan, for what would be a ten-year stint in Asia. The time spent in Asia readily shows itself in Snyder's poems, “infused as they are with the appreciation of the sublime as well as the simple.” "Shooting the Hundred-Pace Rapids/ Su Tung P'o saw, for a moment/ it all stand still.
