The Pressures of Male Dominance “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” and “Rape” both written by Adrienne Rich, describe two different types of male dominance. Dominance is the state of superiority or power that one has over another. Two types of dominance include physical dominance and mental dominance. Gender roles and the expectations of each are shown within Adrienne Rich’s two poems “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” and “Rape.” Adrienne Rich’s poem “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” consists of three quatrains written in free verse. Written from a feminist view, this poem “examines the life of a woman dominated by men” (Stark PAGE). The weight of her marriage is shown when Rich writes about “the massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band” as if it is something holding her down (7). Aunt Jennifer feels pressure even when she is knitting. Although knitting is a particularly easy task, Aunt Jennifer’s fingers “find even the ivory needle hard to pull” (6). …… Rich criticizes the male world for the oppression Aunt Jennifer is under. This oppression causes Aunt Jennifer to create a world of her own, where she does not feel under the control of her husband.
