Evaluation of the movie Smoke

Smoke was written by Paul Auster and directed by Wayne Wang and debuted in theaters in 1995. This film examines the relationship of a small group of men in New York City in the early 90’s. A cigar shop in Brooklyn serves as the hub from which they all meet and many of the interactions take place. The theme of this film is that at the core of life are relationships of varying importance and closeness and that these relationships define and mold who we are. These relationships are formed through the use of the interpersonal communication skills that we have studied throughout this course. The two main characters are Augie Wren played by Harvey Keitel and Paul Benjamine played by William Hurt. Augie manages the Brooklyn cigar shop where Paul, a novelist, buys his cigars. Their relationship is a great example of the stages that relationships go through as outlined in chapter six of Circle of Love by Donna Friess. In this short film we see these men go through the contact, experimental and, intensifying stages of relationships. They eventually reach a point where intimacy is achieved between the two. They share an intellectual and emotional intimacy described in chapter nine of Friess’s book. This is closeness not achieved in the majority of friendships, but is a great thing when it occurs.
