... At least, I hope thats what Im doing. ... Beyond CCs inclusion of witty reminders of this metaphor in the episode, what I applaud in his script are the ways in which authorative, manipulative, scathing or silent, and therefore chess-like, POWER PLAYS are written in:
the authorative sanctions pending over CSMs head (from WMM) and our heroes (from the Justice Department)
the way CSM is becoming a Deep Throat figure to Spender (the father teaching but also manipulating his son into becoming his heir),
the rooster fight/Cain and Abel confrontation between Mulder and Spender who are like two rapid chess players trying to outdo each other in Washington Square (paraphrasing Mulder to Spender: "No, I dont have a question, I just think youre wrong", "Youre insulting me when you should be taking notes", "I wont tolerate this, give this man some food" - touche !), and
the restrained and non verbalized but nonetheless tension-filled gauging between Scully and Diana (and Im sure youve all noticed that the only thing differentiating these two ladies first name is the "i" - a reference to Mulders joke in the Pilot? "The eye/I in FBI" - a mythological invocation of the hunter Goddess? ... I absolutely adored the shot-counter-shot exchange of glances during the power play at the close of Spenders little video showing. ... (Speaking of which, I really loved CCs choice of words when he has Scully walk out on Diana in a later scene. ...
I also appreciated the lack of direct or sustained eye-contact between the two agents when they meet again in Gibsons room. ... LOL ) I jest, but the scene really does move me. I really believe that, in this episode, as in last weeks, were seeing Scully coming to the realization that she does care for the X-Files, possibly setting aside the doubts she exposed in "Patient X/Red & the Black" about the future of her involvement in Mulders quest (last week, to M who frees her from Skinners monster assignment, she says: "I? I heard we. ... agent Mulder and I have investigated over the last 5 years.
