In the essay “The Achievement of Desire”, author Richard Rodriguez acquaints with different episodes of his life in relation to Richard Hoggart’s work. ... He begins recollecting his childhood years and his foundation in education, when a girl is captured to his every word surrounded by numerous activity, “nodding and nodding at all that [he says]; she even takes notes” (Rodriguez 652). Rodriguez reminisces on the lessons he learned where it came to his family, his teachers, his schooling, and himself. Those discrepancies allow Rodriguez to trace his expression on speaking and caring.
Encouraged by his parents, Rodriguez “first entered a classroom barely able to speak English” (Rodriguez 653). At first Rodriguez felt “angry at them for having encouraged [him] toward classroom English; but gradually this anger was exhausted, replaced by guilt as school grew more and more attractive to [him]” (Rodriguez 656).
