Stokesie, is a “responsible 22 year old, married man, with two children, who “thinks he’s going to be a manager [of the store] some sunny day” (91)—when the A&P is turned into “the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki Tea Company” (91) in some far off future. ... Along with the female “sheep [who are] pushing their carts down the aisle” (91), he is appalled by the girl’s lack of decorum. ... He notices everything from the “chunky” one’s two piece—“it was bright green” (90); the tall one “with black hair that hadn’t frizzled right,” [. ... ] “And a chin that (is) too long,” (90); and the third one—“not as tall”, who “walk[s] straight” on her “long prima-donna[s] legs” (90). ... Lengal over emphasizes the point that “this [store] isn’t the beach” (92), and embarrass the girls? ... Watching— the sheep going through the chutes, (or aisles) of the store; watching the pin balls bounce off the walls, bouncing around uncontrollably.
