The problem statement in this qualitative report, bed rest from the perspective of the high-risk pregnant women, is clearly stated. This report is to offer more qualitative information about the physical and psychosocial effects of prolonged bed rest of the high-risk pregnant women from the women’s perspective. The significance of this information is to help the nurse provide better quality care for these women and their families. The author chose this particular study because he believed that there wasn’t enough qualitative information regarding bed-rest in the high-risk pregnant women especially from the women’s perspective.
Through out the problem statement and literature review, the author has included information about preliminary research studies that have already been conducted regarding the effects of stress of the pregnant women while on bed rest. ... ,1993) that indicated that pregnant women on bed rest experience physiological deconditioning, dysphoria, and prolonged postpartum recovery. In Curtis’s report (1986) women on bed rest suffered somatic complaints, anxiety and depression. The women involved (n=30) also reported major concerns around issues of planning and control, family responses and support, opinions of professionals and emotional lability. ... 15 who defines stressor as an “internal or external event, condition, situation and or cue that has the potential to bring about or actually activate significant physical or psychosocial reaction” and Maloni’s research which described the different types of bed rest. He identified two types: complete bed rest: confinement to bed with no skeletal
weight bearing for 2 or more days and partial bed rest: confinement to bed for part of the day and never on complete bed rest for 2 or more days.
