In Joyce Carol Oates’s story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? ... The protagonist in this story is a girl named Connie. Through out the story she paints her self as someone who does not know who she is because she lives a life through her mother, and is trying to prove that she is beautiful and everything more. ... Throughout the story the reader learns more about her and realizes that she has been illustrated as a girl with no life of her own.
From the very beginning of the story, Connie was already being portrayed as a pretty little girl who was living through her mother because she knew nothing else. This is shown at the very beginning of the story with a start of “She was fifteen and she had a quick, nervous giggling habit of craning her neck to glance into mirrors or checking other peoples faces to makes sure her own was alright” (148). ...
Throughout the story, Connie reflects this girl who is pretty and always knows what she is doing.
