... Set way back from the main road, tree cover stops any source of natural light, the wood stands tall and menacing. ... I entered this run-down shack as I was somewhat drawn in by the smell of rotting wood leering out the open door. I peered round a solid block of firewood and sighted a glowing pile of black wood in a small alcove. It took a few seconds for my brain to take in what I saw, the log cabin was about twenty feet square and yet every single little space appeared to be covered by something, whether it be a simple plank of dead wood or some interesting looking dead creatures head. ... In fact everything inside the woods was completely dark and dead looking. I stood at the mouth of the wood for what seemed like an age but for what I knew must only have been a minute or two. ... I had been told the wood made no noise and up until now I could have heard a pin drop. ... I stared at this solitary tree with impaired vision, my eyes had not yet adjusted to the dark. ... I was ready now to believe all the stories about this wood I just wanted to disappear, I closed my eyes somewhat hoping that I would wake up, that this wasn’t real. ... It all looked so different, I immediately thought I had come the wrong way and yet inside I knew that this was the path which I had traced just five minutes ago and yet did not lead to the opening of the wood.
