sports and games in the 18th century

Sports and Games

The Eighteenth Century was a decisive period in the history of sports and games in England. ... At the same time, other games enjoyed dramatic increases in popularity. This was particularly true of cricket and horse racing, which owed much to the patronage of members of the English aristocracy, and also indoor games like billiards, dominoes and whist. It now seems astonishing how such brutal animal sports can be associated with quite ordinary games like cricket. But perhaps the most important Eighteenth Century development in sport was the drawing up of strict set of rules – a response to heavy gambling as well as to the growing desire for a well ordered society.

The Eighteenth Century was a time when some once-popular pastimes lost their appeal and when others began to assume their modern form. To Joseph Strutt, writing - The sports and Pastimes of the People of England, it appeared that some of these changes were symptoms of a general rise in civilised standards.
