During February of 1997 I met a boy named Derek in my class. Derek and I had never met each other before our first day at school. Now well into the school year, we have become very close friends, I might even say we are best friends. There is something you need to know about Derek though, he isn't an ordinary 15 year old boy, he is mentally retarded and comes from the poor side of town where he lives in an apartment with his father, Hank, and mother, Kim. Both of his parents work so Derek never gets the attention he needs in his life. Our school is basically made up of two parts, the people that get made fun of and the people that make fun of others. Unfortunately, Derek and I get made fun of everyday. Many people used to make fun of Derek because he is retarded.
