Fold & Faulting

The earth crust is one of the most amazing things that human can study. The tectonics plates and their movement cause changes in earth’s crust. Folding and faulting are among those movements that cause changes in the surface of the earth. Folding as described by the dictionary of physical is ‘A bend in formerly planar strata of rock resulting from movement of the crustal rocks. ’ In the same dictionary faulting is described as ‘A crack or fissure in rock, the product of fracturing as a result of tectonic movement.’ Folds are the result of pressure caused by moving of the tectonic plates. The result may be a warping or bending effect. The length of the fold can vary from centimetres to several kilometres. Folds generally occur when the rock characteristic and the forces acting on the rock join to allow deformation and changes in the surface.
