Was it really the Friar's Fault?

In the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, many critics have argued the point that one main character was responsible for the suicides of the two young lovers. This character was Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence married Romeo and Juliet in secret, gave Juliet a plan and the means to carry out that plan, and he withheld the information that could have saved Romeo and Juliet though out the entire play. Had the Friar not intervened with the young loves’ lives they would not have died. One major reason why many people believe that the Friar is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, is because he married them in secret. First of all, Romeo and Juliet’s parents were very opposed to the idea of them even getting acquainted. The Montagues, Romeo’s parents, have long been in a feud with the Capulets, Juliet’s parents.
