     Leonardo was born on Saturday morning April 15, 1452 about twenty miles outside Florence in Vinci, Italy. Leonardo was the illegitimate son of a 25-year -old notary, Ser Peiro, and a peasant girl, Caterina.
     Leonardo’s mother took custody of Leonardo after his birth, and he lived in the nearby village of Anchiano were he remained for four years during which Ser Piero married his first wife. At the age of five, Leonardo was sent to live with his grandparents, uncle, father and stepmother. Not much is known about Leonardo’s boyhood, only a story which shows how Leonardo’s personality was in his childhood. ...      Not much is known about the relationship between Leonardo and his father but in Leorado’s notebook he had written “On the 9th of July, 1504 Wednesday at 7 o’clock, died Ser Piero da Vinci, notary at the place of the Podesta, my father, at 7 o’clock. ... ” Leonardo (11). ...
     Leonardo’s father Ser Peiro took Leonardo’s art work secretly into Florence and sold it to merchants for money. Ser Peiro soon recognized Leonardo’s talents and at 15 took him to become an apprentice in an artist’s studio. Leonardo was apprenticed by Andrea del Verrocchio, one of the most sought out artists of Italy. In the house of Verrocchio Leonardo learned commencing and grinding of colors. ... Leonardo also learned how to draw several kinds of panels and how to make various colors of black. Leonardo was introduced to many activities, from painting altarpieces and panel pictures to the creation of large sculptural projects in marble and bronze. Leonardo learned many things in his apprenticing years with Andrea del Verrocchio. ...
     In the years sometime between 1476 to 1478 Leonardo set up his own studio in Florence though it is not known exactly where. During this time Leonardo was known for going out into the towns place looking for beautiful or ugly people. Leonardo’s first large painting the Adoration of the Magi was left unfinished and was ordered in 1481 for the monastery of San Donato at Scopeto, Florence.     
     About 1482 Leonardo entered the service of the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sfroza, having written the duke an astonishing letter in which stated that he could build portable bridges, knew the techniques of constructing bombardments and of making cannons, that he could build ships as well as armored vehicles, catapults and other war machines, and that he could execute sculpture in marble, bronze and clay.
