POWER AND POLITICS IN WORK RELATED ORGANISATIONS
Inroduction: Till a few years ago power and politics were treated as dirty words, not worthy of discussion on the subject of organizational behaviour but both have now acquired a sense of respectability because of their significan impact on the behaviour of the people in the organizations. Nowadays no discussion on organizational behaviour is complete without a reference to power and politics involved in Organisational mattes.
Definition of Power:
In general sense power is the ability to influence other people and events. From an organizational perspective it has been defined by Robbins as “Power is the capacity that a person A has to influence the behaviour of person B so that B does something he or she would not otherwise do. ...
The most important aspect of power is that it is a function of dependence. The greater the dependence of B on A , the greater is the A’s power in the relationship. ... A person can have power can have power over you if and only if that person has possession over thing that you desire.
Bases and Sources of power: Bases and the sources of power are two different terms as sources tell us where the powerholder gets his or her power bases i. ... the sources refer to how the bases of power can be controlled. There are four sources of power:
1.) Position Power: In the formal groups and the organizations the most frequent access to one or more of the power bases is one’s structural position. ... ) Personal Power: Personality traits reappear within the topic of power when we acknowledge the fact that one’s personal characteristics can be a source of power. ... ) Expert Power: Expertise is a means by which the powerholder comes to control specialized information(rather then control itself). ... The same thing is applicable to the Computer Specialists , tax accountants , solar engineers and industrial psychologists and other specialists are able to wield power as a result of their expertise. ... ) Opportunity Power: Being in the right place at the right time can provide a person with opportunity to exert power.
