From his first encounters with humans to his last known days when he was seen on the ship, the creature is constantly a victim of intolerance simply based on his physical appearance. There were many times throughout the story that he was turned away from friendship, acceptance and even simply, calm and kind human interaction because of the way he looked. ... In his attempt to gain acceptance into their circle of friends, he mastered their language, studied books and self-educated himself to the point of being equal or perhaps superior intellectually to the cottagers. ... They judged him based on his looks and based on his looks he was rejected by them.
The sad truth is that people are still rejecting others based solely on appearance even today, and just like the creature sought for acceptance (although he did this by improving himself mentally) the people of today are doing the same by changing their physical appearance.
