“The Postman” was introduced in America in 1995 and was nominated for four Academy awards. The movie is an Italian film directed by Michael Radford. The main character Mario is a son of a hardworking fisherman. Mario lives off the coast of Italy in a small fishing village where an unexpected celebrity comes to live on the island. Mario learns of the arrival of the celebrity from watching a newsreel at the village cinema. Pablo Neruda arrives in Italy after being exiled from his country for communistic reasons. Mario notices that Neruda is surrounded by beautiful women in the newsreel and it makes him more curious. Mario is searching for a job and comes across a postman opening. The small village does not carry many literate people and the postman job is to deliver mail to one person on the island. That one person ends up being Pablo Neruda whose house is at the top of the high point of the island. Mario’s curiosity expands each day he delivers the mail because Neruda receives enormous amounts of mail from women around the world. Mario is fascinated with Neruda and generally tries to spy on him as much as possible during each visit. Neruda at first generally tries to avoid Mario’s snooping. They eventually begin speaking about different matters after the traditional greeting of dropping off the mail and leaving.
