I think that George Orwell used Winston as the protagonist because he is what every Protagonist should be like. He stood up for what he believed in, and he fought for his cause until the very end. He even defied O’Brien’s authority and orders even though he knew he was going to get hurt and punished for it. Big Brother was a perfect antagonist, he wore the people of his country down until they only thought thoughts that Big Brother wanted them to think. I think that choosing to have an internal conflict made it even more suspenseful. The fact that it was an internal conflict always left you wondering whether Winston would choose to go down the easier path , which was , the party’s way.
