INVESTIGATING DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS
Introduction
In this practical we will investigate redox reactions involving (a) the halogens and halide ions
(b) the metals and metal ions
The aim is to determine which halogen / halide ions is the best oxidizing or reducing agent, and which metal / metal ion is the best oxidizing or reducing agent. In order to determine this we will attempt to carry out displacement reactions of the general form:
AB + C A + BC
In other words, element C displaces (pushes out) element A from its compound and element A is left uncombined. As with many redox reactions there will be colour changes occurring. ...
Check your results for any patterns, and carry out more reactions as necessary to confirm the pattern. ...
Carry out more reactions as necessary to check or confirm any patterns. ... Write balanced equations for the reactions involving the halogens / halide ions. ... Write balanced equations for the reactions occurring between metals / metal ions.
