The essay firstly defines the use of ‘recreational’ drugs and consumption of alcohol. It then makes the comparison between the two by recognising alcohol as a drug substance, followed by exploring the intentions of and problems caused by alcohol consumption and drug use. In the later part of this essay, some discussions are made to demonstrate why people would consider alcohol consumption is different to drug use, and the validity of such arguments is considered.
The meaning of ‘the use of ‘recreational’ drugs’ in the context of this essay is equated with the meaning of ‘recreational drug use’ – the use of any psychoactive substances in a recreational way (Ainsworth, 2002). The use and the definition of the term ‘recreational drug’ are controversial and can be ambiguous, which merits an essay in its own topic. One connotation of the word Recreational according to The American Heritage Dictionary is ‘of or relating to the occasional use, asserted not to be addictive, of narcotics’. Erich Goode stated his idea on drug classification from a sociological standpoint that psychoactivity is a primary element in defining drugs and it leads to the classification of recreational use (Goode, 1999). According to Ainsworth (2002), there is no classification for ‘recreational drug’, there is a definition that is used about the way in which people use drugs. It can be ambiguous if we consider the phrase ‘recreational drugs’ by its literal meaning without setting context.
