Introduction
This essay will define the term homeostasis and the process of the negative feedback loop. It will focus on the kidney .It will describe the components of the kidney and the contribution made towards the maintenance of homeostasis.
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a state of relative constancy within the internal environment (Fox, 1996). ... It is important in homeostasis that the intracellular and extracellular fluid is maintained at the same concentration. ...
Extracellular fluid provides optimum conditions for the function and life of cells and therefore the regulation of the chemical and physical properties are essential for the function of the cells (Brod, 1973)
The kidney, and its contribution toward the maintenance of homeostasis.
The primary function of the kidney is to regulate the internal fluid environment through the formation of urine and thereby contributing towards homeostasis. The kidney is also a site of synthesis and degradation of essential body constituents and removing toxins (Schnermann & Sayegh, 1998). ... Within 24 hours, approximately 170 litres of fluid will pass through the kidney but only a small proportion will exit as urine (Fox, 1996).
If the kidney is to fulfil its function as the organ of homeostasis of the internal environment, it must be intimately connected with it. This is provided for by a rich blood supply to the kidney (Brod, 1973).
