Eng 220 By: Vladimir Machulskiy Introduction to literature Throughout American writing history, there were and are a countless number of writers that posses different skills and levels of writing. There are those that write fictional stories or novels, others why tend to be more on the non-fictional side of writing and of course the writers like John Updike, who simply want to be different in sense of their writing skill and style. John Updike’s style and sense of writing was always focusing around short stories. with the use of the element known as ‘slang’. In most of his short stories Updike used the first person point of view because he believed that it this particular point of view emphasized more on the character. Although most people think that the first person point of view is very hard to write in, Updike makes a perfect since using it in one of his stories called “A&P”. In his story we are faced with a teenager named Sammy who is about nineteen years old and who is working as a grocery clerk at a 1961’s supermarket called “A&P” Based on the time described in the story during the 60’s the girls were not allowed to wear nothing but bathing suit to the supermarkets and the John Updike makes a good example of that by making them a target of both despise and anger from Sammy’s boss who criticized them even after the girls made clear that they were running the errands for their parents.
